As the gates open, we travel down the beautiful driveway to the home of Barbara Cartland where so many of her romantic novels were written. We glide into the entrance hall with its high vaulted ceilings and gilt decor filled with gifts from Fans. From here we travel back in time into the library and discover family memorabilia and objects d’art from around the world and her volumes of books. The library was the seat of her literary prowess, including the sofa where she reclined every day, dictating her stories to her dedicated secretaries before they were transcribed into her much-loved books. Every book has a different story and cover which were faithfully painted by Francis Marshall, so we travel down the long corridor to enjoy his many beautiful watercolours.
We then discover the wonderful drawing room, with its stunning views across the Hertfordshire countryside, and see the desk from which Barbara wrote her many letters in support of good causes. The views from this room were also enjoyed by a young Beatrix Potter, inspiring many of her famous creations. Finally, we have one last look at the home of romance from the secretaries’ room before we say goodbye, as we float over the magnificent house, that is the Home of Pure Romance.
From all of us at Barbara Cartland we wish you all the most romantic and happy Valentines Days.
